Alan Pardew is aiming to bolster Newcastle’s forward line with the signing of Reading striker Shane Long, according to the Daily Star.
The Toon will offer £5 million in cash, along with £2 million rated Leon Best, who has been told he can leave the club this summer.
Newcastle had long been targeting Paris St Germain forward Mevlut Erdinc, but the star continues to say he wants to stay in France, and Pardew has been forced to look for other options.
Long, who scored 25 goals for Reading last season, is hot property in the transfer market, and after the side lost in the npower Championship playoffs to Swansea, Long looks set to make a move to another club in pursuit of Barclays Premier League action.
While Reading have reportedly demanded £10 million for Long, Newcastle are hopeful that they can get the star for less with Leon Best as a carrot for the lower-tier club.
Newcastle are also reportedly considering offloading Nile Ranger, worth £1 million, as part of the deal if Reading drive a hard enough bargain.
