Birmingham manager Chris Hughton feels he has landed a promotion specialist after snapping up Steven Caldwell on a free from Wigan.
The 30-year-old Scottish defender, who has previously helped both Sunderland and Burnley reach the top flight, has signed a two-year contract at St Andrew's.
"Ultimately it will be about what Steven can show on the football pitch," Hughton told City's official website.
"He's an experienced player who has been involved in two teams which have gained promotion from this division. He's a leader type who will be a big influence for those around him, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
"Everybody I've spoken to about him has spoken very highly of him both as a player and about his character.
"In what will be a challenging season, he is a welcome addition and the right type of player for us."
