Arsenal are considering whether to up their bid for Alex Chamberlain, after Southampton ‘laughed off’ a £6 million bid for the star, according to the Daily Star.
Southampton have reportedly insisted for months now that Chamberlain is worth no less than £12 million, and after Arsenal came forward with a bid of just half that, Saints’ executive chairman Nicola Cortese insisted that he won’t waver on his original evaluation of the Arsenal target.
A source told the paper of the bid: “It was regarded as derisory, and would not have been accepted even if the club had been on the brink of bankruptcy.”
Arsenal will now be considering the possibility of increasing their price to £12 million. Arsene Wenger is not known for spending big money on transfers though, particularly on lower league players, and with Arsenal forking out a reported £11 million for Gervinho, Wenger may not waver on his £6 million evaluation of the star.
But with the possibility that Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas could leave Arsenal this summer, Wenger is faced with a dilemma in trying to rebuild the squad and make the side capable of being serious trophy contenders next season.
