Arsenal are preparing to reignite their interest in Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker, it has been claimed.
According to The People, the north London club are monitoring the situation of the £7 million-rated German, who only has one-year remaining on his contract at the Weserstadion.
However, despite the reported interest from Arsenal, Werder remain hopeful they can get the 26-year-old to extend his deal beyond its current terms.
"The chance of Per Mertesacker remaining with us is still alive," general manager Klaus Allofs told Deutsche Presseagentur.
"We have just dropped talks of a new deal for now. It's not off the cards. We have a season to go and we could easily start to discuss it during the new campaign."
Mertesacker would certainly provide Arsenal with the added defensive steel they so crave, as Arsene Wenger tries to reinforce his backline before the start of the new season.
The Arsenal boss is keen to bring a central defender with an imposing aerial presence to the Emirates Stadium and, standing at 6ft 6in, Mertesacker knows how to look after himself.
Arsenal have also been linked with Blackburn's Chris Samba and Gary Cahill of Bolton in their pursuit of new recruits.
