Former Aston Villa hitman Juan Pablo Angel has tipped Darren Bent to follow in his footsteps and become the new king of Villa Park.

The England international enjoyed a productive start to his career in the Midlands after moving from Sunderland in January, scoring 9 Barclays Premier League goals in just 16 appearances.

Signed for £24 million, Bent has quickly become a fans favourite after helping steer the club away from relegation last term, and Angel is confident the striker can continue his successes at the club under Alex McLeish.

"Darren will be feeling on top of the world as the hero of the fans. There is no feeling like it in football. It's astounding being a favourite of the fans," said the 35-year-old LA Galaxy forward.

"To hear those fans cheer when you come out to play through the tunnel or to hear your name chanted when you score a goal, it's hard to really explain how that feels. You have to live it to understand what the feelings are.

"When you score especially and get that incredible recognition from the supporters - especially from the Holte End - wow, what a feeling."

The Colombian enjoyed six successful years at Villa Park after moving to the club from River Plate in 2001, and continues to score goals in the MLS currently alongside David Beckham in LA.

His time with the Villains remains one of the highlights in a distinguished football career though, and Angel has not forgotten the support he received whilst at the club.

"I still remember that fan support I received during my time at Villa. Oh my God! Sometimes I just sit down and think about a matchday at Villa Park," the player continued.

"It's when I'm driving the car or when I'm on the bus. I let my mind wander. I still have fresh memories about stepping out of the tunnel for matches. I am grateful to all the Villa fans for the way they treated me and all the support they gave me.

"I just wish I could have played with this team at the moment. When I look at the lads who have played over the last few years, playing with these guys would have been a dream. Whenever I get the chance I love watching Villa and to play with some of these guys now would have been fantastic."
