Terry tells Chelsea to sign English star – reports

John Terry has told Chelsea to go get Bolton defender Gary Cahill, according to The London Evening Standard.

It’s believed that Terry was asked to give his impressions of young English defenders by the Chelsea hierarchy, and Gary Cahill was the first name on the list.

Chelsea are thought to be interested in another centre-back after speculation began linking Alex with a £9 million move to Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Making the need for a Barclays Premier League ready central defender even greater is the rumour that David Luiz could be the man charged with filling Michael Essien’s boots in the centre of Chelsea’s midfield.

Luiz experienced a standout first term at Stamford Bridge, displacing Alex, leaving Alex to be frozen out of the squad until early May.

Despite Luiz’s success last term, it’s believed Chelsea would like to ease some of the defensive pressure that may have led to some rather costly mistakes.

The theory is that Luiz could take over for Essien in the centre of the park, using his supreme technical ability and his defensive prowess to cement the holding midfield role until Essien is capable of returning.

The potential departure of Alex and the move of Luiz would leave Chelsea with just Terry and Branislav Ivanovic as serviceable centre-backs.

But with Ivanovic as the first-choice right-back, manager Andre Villas-Boas would be dangerously thin in options at the back.

Previous manager Carlo Ancelotti was criticised for his bare bones defense after the sale of Ricardo Carvalho to Real Madrid after Terry and Alex both suffered injuries throughout the year.
