Northampton Town striker Billy McKay has left the club by mutual consent.

McKay scored 16 times in two seasons at Sixfields after joining from Leicester City.

"Billy was unlucky that he broke his elbow in my first game in charge," said Cobblers boss Gary Johnson. "I only really saw him briefly in matches, most of his time under my management was spent doing rehab work."

He added: "We offered him terms at the end of last season, but I was honest with Billy, and said that after a successful summer of recruitment he was unlikely to be in my first choice XI this season.

"He accepted that but said he wanted and needed first team football and I respect that.

"So, we gave him permission to talk to other clubs and said we would not stand in his way if he got himself fixed up.

"He has a terrific opportunity lined up and I wish him every success."
