Arsenal have missed out in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Axel Witsel.
The highly-rated Belgian international had been linked with a host of clubs across Europe, with Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers also thought to be interested in bringing the player to England.
However, Benfica have won the race to sign the 22-year-old in a move that is thought to be in the region of £8 million.
The Gunners have been linked with a handful of midfielders this summer, with Yann M'Vila, Scott Parker and Adel Taarabt all speculatively linked with a move to the Emirates.
Whilst the Witsel interest was also speculative, it appears Wenger is in the market to bring a player to the club in position, and stated in May that he would look to sign the 'right' players should they become available to Arsenal.
With doubts continuing to remain over the future of Samir Nasri and club captain Cesc Fabregas with the Gunners, the Frenchman appears to be leaving his options open with regards to reinforcements at Arsenal this summer.
However, Witsel will not be making the move to Arsenal, and the north Londoners boss will have to look elsewhere in his pursuit of players.
