New striker signing Adam Birchall is thrilled to be linking up with former team-mate Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham.

Birchall came close to quitting football shortly after being released by Arsenal, but his passion for the game was re-kindled when he joined up with Hessenthaler at non-League Dover.

He told the Kent Messenger: "It means the world to be back playing for him (Hessenthaler) because he was one of the main reasons for me going to Dover."

He continued: "I am so excited about working with him again and I know it's going to do my career good for the future."

Despite their history together, Birchall is well aware that he cannot live off past glories and is determined to make a name for himself at Priestfield.

He added: "I am going to be working so hard on the training ground and the pitch and giving 110% in everything I do to get the best out of myself and continue with the form I had last year."
