Stewart Downing is set to sign for Liverpool after a £20 million fee was agreed with Aston Villa for the England midfielder.

Manager Kenny Dalglish has flown back to the UK from the club’s pre-season tour of China in order to finalise the deal.

Dalglish leaves after leading his side to a 4-3 win over Guangdong on Wednesday, giving the Merseysiders a winning start to their tour.

Arsenal comfortably beat a Malaysia XI side 4-0 this week as the North London club’s pre-season tour continues.
