Chris Hughton opened his tenure as Birmingham boss with a comfortable 1-0 pre-season victory at Cork.

Summer signing Adam Rooney scored the only goal of the game after half-an-hour, with Hughton making seven changes at half-time to give as much of his squad game-time as possible. Blues now fly back to Birmingham following what has been a brief but productive training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

Hughton told the club's official website: "Coming away from the game with no injuries was the most important thing for us."

He added: "We probably could have penetrated a little more in the final third. We had some good periods of possession but probably didn't threaten the goal as much as we would have liked, but it's our first game.

"We always knew we were going to make a few changes at half-time, but the changes disrupted the flow a little bit.

"I think when that happens you need a goal to perhaps change it a little bit. But it was a nice opportunity for the young lads. In particular I thought Nathan Redmond did very well."
