Manchester City have edged ahead of Arsenal in the race for Romelu Lukaku, according to the Metro.
Lukaku starred for Anderlecht last season, and the 18-year-old has earned comparisons to Didier Drogba for displaying great talent at such a young age.
While the Belgium international has long been a target for Chelsea, Arsenal were believed to have made a concrete offer for the starlet in the vicinity of £18 million.
But Manchester City are hoping that a last minute bid will snatch Lukaku from Arsenal’s clutches, particularly with the club boasting what seems to be an unlimited transfer budget.
Both Arsenal and Manchester City can offer Lukaku Champions League football, so the choice may come down to personal preference for the youngster if both clubs can meet Anderlecht’s asking price.
Both Manchester City and Arsenal have made one big name signing this transfer period, with Gael Clichy and Gervinho moving to the clubs respectively. Lukaku will bring into play the rivalry both clubs have had during the summer, involving both Clichy’s move up north and a possible deal with Samir Nasri.
