Leeds boss is dealt a double pre-season blow

Simon Grayson is facing the prospect of starting this season’s campaign for promotion to the Barclays Premier League without two of his best attacking options.

The Leeds duo of Luciano Becchio and Davide Somma have both suffered potential surgery-requiring injuries over the summer.

Argentinean Becchio, who's scored 56 goals for Leeds in the past three seasons, ruptured a ligament after coming back from a hamstring injury that plagued him at the end of last season.

Grayson is now waiting to discover whether or not the 27-year-old will require surgery before planning out his recovery.

"We're just weighing things up with Luc now and whether or not he needs an operation," said Grayson. "We'll know more over the next few days in terms of which way we will go.

"We let things settle down over the summer after the injury last season and he did some light training when we came back, but he's got a ruptured tendon and we have to consider things now."

Somma could face the prospect of missing the entire season after suffering a cruciate injury. The sort of injury generally entails a six to nine month recovery period, meaning it's conceivable the player might not be ready for Leeds' season-closing fixture against Leicester on April 28.

Grayson said that the club is now waiting on the swelling in the knee to go down before Somma will have an operation, further pushing back the recovery period.

"We're obviously hugely disappointed Dave's sustained this injury," he continued.

"You could say six to nine months to recover from something like this. It'll take a couple of weeks for the swelling to come down then he'll have the operation to put it back in place.

"It's been frustrating for all of them. Dave's was innocuous, and Luciano had the injury at the back end of last season and has done some work with us."
