Npower Championship promotion contenders: Leicester City

Leicester City gave a glimpse of their Npower Championship potential with an impressive display against Spanish giants Real Madrid on Saturday.

The Foxes lost the prestigious friendly 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, with Lloyd Dyer's 89th minute volley not enough for Sven-Goran Erikson's side after Jose Callejon and Karim Benzema had struck for Los Blancos.

Jose Mourinho played most of his first team players in-front of a sell out 32,000 crowd, and Erikson believes his side showed they have what it takes for the upcoming season.

"It was a good workout, no doubt about that. You expect them to have the ball more than we would, but I think we stood up to them rather well and it was nice to score a goal against them," the Swede told the official Leicester City website.

"Physically we're ready (for the new season) and the new players have settled in really well. I can at least promise you that defensively, as a team, we are much better than last season and that was a must."

Six of the club's summer signings started against, with Sean St. Ledger and Michael Johnson also featuring from the bench as the Leicester boss looks to integrate some of the new additions.

Their big sending doesn't appear to be over yet either, with Erikson revealing the Foxes are also closing on Swiss international Gelson Fernandes and chasing North Korean striker Jong Tae-se.

"Gelson, yes, it will be official very soon," said Eriksson in the Leicester Mercury.

"We are working on different targets and I am not sure if something will happen before next Saturday or not. But sooner or later it will happen."

"Jong is one on a long list. I know him. He played for North Korea in the World Cup. He is a good striker but he is only one name on a long, long list."

Promotion odds: 6/4
