Liverpool facing Blues battle for South American wingback - reports

Chelsea are preparing to hijack Liverpool's attempts to land highly rated Porto wingback Alvaro Pereira according to

The 25-year-old defender-come-midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League after impressing in his current club's treble winning season last year.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas has been consistently linked with a number of his former players since swapping Portugal for Stamford Bridge, and it is believed that the expected sale of Yuri Zhirkov could pave way for Pereira to join Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has also been credited with an interest in Pereira, who recently returned from the Copa America victorious having helped Uruguay to a 15th continental title alongside current Reds star Luis Suarez.


A host of names have been linked with a move to Anfield as Dalglish steps up his search for a left-back to replace the outgoing Paul Konchesky who left Liverpool for Npower Championship promotion hopefuls Leicester City last month.

Having already completed the signings of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Alexander Doni, Liverpool are expected to make one final foray into the transfer market, and will hope to fight off late interest from Chelsea in order to seal Pereira's signature.
