Arsenal suffer blow in pursuit of key target - reports

Everton defender Phil Jagielka will reportedly reject the opportunity to join Arsenal, should the north London club launch a renewed attempt to sign him.

According to The Mirror, the 28-year-old is more than happy to remain at Goodison Park for the foreseeable future, and will snub the Gunners if they come calling again.

Arsenal have already seen an offer of £10 million rejected for Jagielka, who is said to have been identified by Arsene Wenger as a key summer target.

The Arsenal boss is desperate to add an imposing centre-back with Barclays Premier League experience to his ranks in order to strengthen is vulnerable back-line, but Jagielka may now be out of reach.

Should Arsenal miss out on Jagielka, they will supposedly focus their attention on either Chris Samba or Gary Cahill, both of whom have been consistently linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium.

However, should Arsenal formalise their interest in the former, then they will seemingly have to contest Tottenham for the signature of the Blackburn ace.

Reports on Wednesday claim Spurs have tabled a proposal for Samba, which includes a lump sum plus any one of Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane, David Bentley or Sebastian Bassong.
