Newcastle United are being linked with a shock move for Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan.
The former French U21 international has found opportunities limited at Old Trafford since arriving from Bordeaux in 2009, making just 28 appearances in all competitions since the move from Ligue 1.
Reports in The Chronicle now claims Newcastle United are considering a move for the 22-year-old, with Alan Pardew looking to boost the Toon squad with just nine days left until the start of the Barclays Premier League season.
The paper cites sources claiming the Magpies have an interest in the player, with Obertan 'in the frame' as a possible addition at St. James' Park in the remainder of the transfer window.
United could be interested in allowing the player to leave the club on loan with a view to a permanent switch, according to the report. Newcastle are looking to bolster in the position as well, with Joey Barton tipped to make a move after being placed on the transfer list.
Obertan has impressed for the Red Devils in their pre-season tour of America, but Sir Alex Ferguson is again expected to use the player sparingly in the coming campaign, potentially opening the door for Newcastle to make an offer for a player who is hungry to show the English fans his ability, claims the paper.
Bayer Leverkusen winger Tranquillo Barnetta has also been placed on the Newcastle United radar, although player representative Barry McIntosh reacted angrily to the Toon's contract offer, which is said to have not offered the player a wage rise.
"As it stands there is not a hope in hell that he will be going to Newcastle. In fact I am angry at their attempts to do it, and behind my back also," McIntosh told skysports.com.
"They have made an approach, but their offer equates to somewhere in the region of £40,000-a-week - which is just ridiculous."
