Two Sunderland new signings got on the score sheet as Sunderland strolled past Darlington to secure another victory in their pre-season preparations, and Steve Bruce’s No.2 Eric Black singled out Ji Dong-won for special praise.
Youngster Jordan Cook opened the scoring on the half hour, before new signing Craig Gardner hammered home a free kick before half time.
Fellow new signing Ji Dong-won added a third in the second half, and the forward is tipped for big things by assistant manager Black.
"The fans will take to Ji because he has a fantastic work ethic," Black said. "He's extremely disciplined and trains very well every day.
"Ji is a bright lad - he's taking on board the things we tell him. As a coach you only have to tell him something once and it's registered. His goal was a fantastic finish."
Meanwhile defender John O'Shea will miss Sunderland's opening game against Liverpool as well as the club's final pre-season fixture against Hibernian.
The Republic of Ireland man injured his hamstring during the club's pre-season tour to Germany, and despite hopes he could begin the season with the rest of the squad, Black admits O'Shea will sit on the sidelines for the start for the campaign.
“O’Shea’s still feeling his hamstring,” said Black. “It’s hard to put a date on his return because he’s actually starting to heal pretty well.
“But it’s too soon to say whether it’s going to be two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. It’s hard to tell, but he’s definitely progressing.”
