Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has struck back at rumours surrounding Alberto Aquilani’s future at Anfield, saying that he is “delighted” with the player's summer training.
Despite rumours linking the Italian midfielder with a return to native clubs AC Milan and Fiorentina, Dalglish was adamant that he was happy to have Aquliani in the Liverpool squad.
“I thought he was still here! He trained this morning didn’t he?” said Dalglish in response to being questioned on a deal.
“We’ve been delighted with him in pre-season, so we’re delighted to have him, if things change then things change, but we’re delighted to have him in the squad.”
If he does stay, Aquilani will have to fight for position with a whole batch of quality midfielders at Liverpool, including Jay Spearing, newcomers Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles and Steven Gerrard who Dalglish added was on the mend and should be available in September.
The praise contradicts Aquilani’s agent's, Franco Zavaglia, who said that Aquilani's departure was more or less certain.
He said: "Aquilani is still tied to a three-year contract with Liverpool and before his eventual departure we will talk with the leadership of Liverpool.
"It seems clear to me that the player doesn't fall into the technical plans of the coach, so the suggestion of his departure is concrete."
