Bilel Mohsni`s early goal earned Southend a deserved 1-0 victory over Hereford.

The Shrimpers took the lead with their first attack after 13 minutes when Ryan Hall's cross fell to Mohsni, who headed in from close range.

The same combination almost doubled Southend's lead after 28 minutes but this time Mohsni's header was well saved by Adam Bartlett.

Southend's Jemal Johnson should have extended the home side's lead two minutes before the break but skewed his left-foot shot wide.

Debutant Neil Harris almost put Southend further ahead seconds into the second half but his header from Hall's cross was tipped over the bar by Bartlett.

Hereford's first effort came on the hour mark but James McQuilkin's free-kick was blocked by Hall.

Despite their dominance, Southend almost conceded 15 minutes before the end when Joe Colbeck unleashed a shot from 12 yards but a crucial block from Luke Prosser thwarted the Bulls.

Mohsni almost added a second in the last two minutes but he headed straight at Bartlett.
