The first goal of the League One season was scored by Colchester's Anthony Wordsworth after 12 minutes at Preston in a game which finished 4-2 to the visitors.

Ian Henderson doubled the scoreline four minutes after the break and Neil Mellor got one back for Phil Brown's side after an hour. Henderson gave the visitors their two-goal cushion again only for Paul Coutts to reduce the deficit. Kayode Odejayi had the final say for the U's after 76 minutes.

Pre-season favourites Huddersfield had to be content with a point after a 1-1 draw with Bury. Winger Gary Roberts' goal after 65 minutes gave Town the lead but Bury got a deserved equaliser with 14 minutes remaining through striker Ryan Lowe.

The two Sheffield clubs got their campaigns off to winning starts - both with 2-0 victories. United eased past Oldham at Boundary Park thanks to second-half goals from defender Harry Maguire and striker Richard Cresswell. Rob Jones and David Prutton were on target for Wednesday against Rochdale at Hillsborough.

A last-gasp equaliser by Jabo Ibehre rescued a point for the MK Dons against Hartlepool. Adam Boyd's 20th-minute header gave Hartlepool an early lead. Luke Chadwick equalised eight minutes into the second-half, James Poole gave the visitors the lead again with five minutes remaining, only for Ibehre's header to make the score 2-2.

Adam Chambers' stunning 35-yard strike for Walsall was the only goal in the match against visitors Leyton Orient, the club he left in the summer.

Carlisle slumped to a 3-0 defeat at home against Notts County. Jeff Hughes' left foot strike from his namesake Lee's cross put the visitors ahead after 13 minutes. A Francois Zoko own goal 20 minutes later gave County a 2-0 lead and veteran striker Lee Hughes increased the lead just before half-time.

Uwe Rosler got off to a winning start as Brentford manager as his side beat Yeovil 2-0 thanks to a 30th-minute Gary Alexander penalty and Shaleum Logan's strike after 76 minutes. Charlton beat Bournemouth 3-0 at the Valley. Dale Stephens, Scott Wagstaff and Johnnie Jackson were on target.

Scunthorpe's trip to Wycombe finished 1-1. James Tunnicliffe's header after 21 minutes put the home side ahead, but Scunthorpe hit back through Michael Nelson five minutes before the break. Wycombe finished the game with 10 men after striker Ben Strevens was shown the red card deep into injury time for a second bookable offence.

Tranmere left it late to beat Chesterfield 1-0 at Prenton Park, Robbie Weir finding the net from close range with 14 minutes remaining. Stevenage and Exeter finished goalless.
