Dutch master predicts big things for the big man
Liverpool - Dirk Kuyt backs Andy Carroll to make his mark this season
Dirk Kuyt has engaged in some early Carroll singing by paying tribute to Liverpool's former Newcastle striker who the Dutchman believes can fire the Reds to the top of the charts this season.
Andy Carroll scored in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Valencia on Saturday, and will possibly line-up against Kuyt as England take on Holland in a mid-week friendly this Wednesday. “Andy is going to be top quality for us this season,” Kuyt said.
“It was difficult for him when he arrived because he had an injury. Then he played a few games and did very well but got another injury. Now he’s had a full pre-season and has scored in his last two games. Hopefully he’ll get another one next weekend.
“Andy is very strong in the air and you can also play it into his feet. He’s a top striker and I’m sure he will do well and score a lot goals for us. We are very satisfied with the result against a very good side,” he continued.
“The organisation was good and it was good to keep a clean sheet. To beat a side like Valencia will give us a lot of confidence for next weekend. It’s all about next week now and looking for the three points to start the season. We are ready.”
Kuyt was also on song after coming on for new signing Jordan Henderson in the second half to orchestrate the second goal, toeing the ball to goalscorer Sotirios Kyrgiakos from a Joe Cole free kick.
The 31-year-old is ready to harmonise with the squad, which has increased in size considerably this summer as Kenny Dalglish splashes the cash on Merseyside.
“I am very happy with the signings we have made this summer and it was good for them to have their first game at Anfield,” he added. “Everyone wants to play, but rivalry is something that in my opinion belongs to a club such as Liverpool. That’s what should happen, you have to double up in every position.
“We want to progress and move forward and to do that you need more than 11 good players.”
Liverpool face Sunderland in their first Barclays Premier League game of the new season on August 13, and Dalglish will again have to choose between Kuyt and former Black Cats midfielder Henderson for the right flank.
