Coventry starlet Gael Bigirimana has been rewarded for his impressive recent progress with a 12-month extension to his contract at the Ricoh Arena.

The talented 17-year-old midfielder shone during pre-season and was duly handed his full League debut in Saturday's opening game of the new campaign against promotion favourites Leicester.

Bigirimana's inclusion and subsequent shining display only proved to highlight his potential and City have moved quickly to tie him down on a longer contract.

Coventry manager Andy Thorn said: "I'm delighted Gael has decided to sign this new deal.

"He has acquitted himself extremely well since his step up to the first team, he fully deserved to make his League debut at the weekend and this extension shows how highly we regard him."

Bigirimana, a graduate of the club's Academy, signed his first professional deal with the Sky Blues in the summer. And that deal, a two-year agreement which ran until June 2013, has now been extended to 2014.
