Liverpool star signing Stewart Downing hopes to be the best winger to move to Merseyside in a long time, and is aiming to be the best in the Barclays Premier League while he’s at it.
Downing signed for Liverpool in mid-July for £19 million, and big things are expected from the England international, who clocked up 63 appearances and nine goals in his two year stint at Aston Villa.
And the former Middlesbrough ace is looking to some of the best midfielders in the Barclays Premier League’s history as the benchmark for continuing his good form and taking Liverpool to greater heights.
“The top wingers tend to do it on a regular basis," the 27-year-old told the Liverpool Echo. “When you look at Ronaldo and Giggs down the years they have done it consistently and that’s what I want to do.
“Whether the manager sees me playing out wide or in different positions, I just want to do well, chip in with goals and provide chances for the front players.
“Fans come to games to be entertained, and hopefully we can do that this season. If I’m out wide I’ll do my best to get to the by-line and whip in crosses as well as chip in with goals.”
Downing knows what is expected of him from the fans, but also from the Liverpool forward line, and he is ready to feed the ball to a strike force that he knows will be hard to beat.
“That’s what the front lads will want from me – especially Andy [Carroll], who is a threat in the box,” Downing added. “Nine times out of ten he’s going to get on the end of it. I’ve not
played with Luis Suarez and people like that yet, but he’s a top player so I’m looking forward to it.”
Downing, who had a particularly successful time last season, says he wants to continue to improve and repay the faith Kenny Dalglish has shown in him this summer.
“Last season was my most consistent by far and I just want that to continue," he continued. "I think that happens as you get older. It’s a big season for me personally and for the club. I want to play well on a regular basis.
“I felt really good last year, and it would be nice to do well because the manager has invested a lot of money in me, so if I can do well for him and the club I’ll be very pleased.”
