Newcastle are looking to sign Dutch left-back Erik Pieters, according to Magpies goalkeeper and friend of the player Tim Krul.

The young defender broke into Holland's senior side last year, taking over from former Arsenal star Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and has been with PSV Einhoven since 2008.

Krul, who plays between the posts alongside Pieters, 23, at international level, has said that the two could also be teammates at St James' Park soon.

He said: "We are interested. The coach himself and the assistants have already seen a few matches of PSV and the question now is whether the clubs can work it out."

It was reported on Monday that Liverpool were making tracks with a deal for Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique, which could leave the Magpies wanting at the back.

"Our current left-back Enrique has a contract that expires, however, he won't sign and is interesting many clubs," the Newcastle United stopper continued.

"Erik is my friend since we played together at the World Championships in Peru in 2005.

"From then we have always kept in touch, regularly send text messages and if possible we get together."

Pieters was bought by the Eredivisie side for €2.5 million at just 19-years-old in 2008.
