Peterborough have had a bid of £500,000 for Paul Coutts rejected by Preston, according to North End boss Phil Brown.

Posh had an initial bid for their former midfielder, 23, turned down by the League One side at the end of last month.

And speaking after Preston's Carling Cup triumph over Crewe on Tuesday night, Brown told the club's official website: "The chairman (Maurice Lindsay) has told me that he rejected a bid in the region of £500,000 for Paul Coutts."

He added: "To be fair, the chairman has taken a lot of stick and it hasn't been comfortable at the moment with the amount of players that have gone through the exit door.

"Where Paul is concerned he has categorically stated no, he came into my office on Sunday after the Colchester game on Saturday having, for me, scored the goal of the season and pledged himself to Preston North End."

Meanwhile, young winger Matt Breeze has left London Road to join non-league Histon on a season-long loan deal.
