Zenit St Petersburg are the latest club to reportedly announce their interest in Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

According to the Daily Mail, the Russian giants will offer Barton - who is available on a free transfer - a contract worth around £68,000-a-week , after tax, although the 28-year-old has plenty of other admirers.

Stoke City have also been credited with an interest in Barton who has previously stated that, although free to leave St James' Park, he could stay at Newcastle.

Barton is certainly committed to giving his all to the Newcastle cause while he remains with the club, and is hoping to play some part against Arsenal in the Magpies' opening Barclays Premier League fixture.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is also open to giving Barton an opportunity to play against the Gunners, and is keeping an open mind.

"I'm still optimistic Joey could play on Saturday," said Pardew.

"He must be 100% and he must be in the right frame of mind."

Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Jose Enrique is closing in on a move to Liverpool, after the two clubs agreed a fee in the region of £6 million on Thursday.
