Blackburn Rovers have signed the Brazilian Denis Irwin in time for the new Barclays Premier League season, as Bruno Ribeiro flies into Ewood Park from his homeland Brazil.
Ribeiro is Steve Kean's third signing of the summer and joins the club for free. The 28-year-old could be lined up as a replacement for Chris Samba who could be snapped up by either Arsenal or Tottenham before the transfer window is out.
But the player, who last played for Gremio Barueri, has also been tipped to compete with Michel Salgado in his preferred position at right back.
After training with Blackburn Rovers, Ribeiro earned the nickname Denis, after legendary Manchester United fullback Denis Irwin, for his ball retention ability.
The Brazilian travelled with Rovers in Austria and in two of their pre-season friendlies, and could debut from the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Ribeiro takes up the number 32 shirt, with his first name “Bruno” embossed above it.
