Arsenal are ‘holding meetings’ with Lazio striker Mauro Zarate, and hope to sign the £10 million star before the transfer window closes in a few weeks, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Zarate has scored 25 goals in 103 appearances for Lazio since signing for the club in 2008. The Argentinian has drawn attention from numerous clubs in Russia, Spain and England.

And while Arsenal are reportedly on the lookout for a centre-back and playmaker, the London club have also started chasing the striker to build on their forward line and finally end a six-season-long trohpyless run.

According to the Italian paper, Zarate’s agent and brother Sergio has said that talks are definitely taking place with Arsenal, and a deal could be completed within the week.

Arsene Wenger said yesterday that Arsenal would spend big if the right players were available, and the £10 million fee attached to Zarate is reportedly not turning the normally frugal Frenchman off.
