Chelsea are set to make a double swoop for Porto players Alvaro Pereira, 25, and Joao Moutinho, 24, in a bid to strengthen up their midfield, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The versatile midfielder Michael Essien is in a lengthy recovery from knee injury, and the Porto pair would go some way to filling the Ghanaian's boots.
Uruguayan Pereira can play in defence or midfield and his Portugese teammate Joao Moutinho can play literally anywhere in the centre or the flanks.
The players, who are around the same age as Chelsea’s prime target Luka Modric, could find themselves with Blue shirts on next season, as bids for the Croatian playmaker continue to be blocked.
A Chelsea delegate has travelled south for talks with Andre Villas-Boas’ former club, and has reportedly been given a budget of just under £50 million to sign the two players.
Pereira could be signed by the start of next week, and at around £20 million is the cheapest of the pair. Moutinho, on the other hand, is believed to be worth around £26 million to the Portuguese champions.
