Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker says he would consider a move to the Premier League, as Arsenal renew their interest in the star.
“It is a good thing to get experience playing abroad. I have said that England excites me,” Mertesaker said.
Arsenal have been on the lookout for a defender, and while Phile Jagielka was said to be at the top of Arsene Wenger’s hitlist, the £18 million price tag slapped on the Englishman has turned the manager off.
Mertesaker is a much cheaper alternative, according to the Daily Star, and is said to be worth around £9 million. And Wenger is becoming increasingly desperate to find a defender after Johan Djourou and Kieran Gibbs picked up knocks against Udinese during the week.
Arsenal have been linked with Chris Samba, Scott Dann and Gary Cahill as well, but Wenger believes that Mertesacker is the best value for money.
And reports in Germany are speculating that Arsenal may be able to sign Mertesacker for even less than that, with the club desperate to accumulate as much money as possible after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
