Emmanuel Frimpong has backed Arsene Wenger's decision to hand the captain's armband to Robin Van Persie, saying the Dutch forward is the ideal man to take Arsenal forward.

After former skipper Cesc Fabregas completed his long-awaited move to Barcelona - the Gunners were quick to announce the appointment of Van Persie, and has been met with approval from players and fans alike.

"I couldn't have picked a better captain for Arsenal," Frimpong told the Official Matchday Programme. "I just wish him luck as captain and hopefully he can take the club forward.

"When I was in the reserve team and used to come over to train with the first team he was always so good to me - he makes everyone feel welcome and cracks jokes with them, which is just what you need."

With a return of just a solitary point from their opening two Barclays Premier League fixtures, pressure continues to mount on Wenger whose attention now turns to Wednesday's Champions League qualifying round second leg tie with Udinese.

And with the squad stretched to its limits after injuries to a number of Arsenal's senior players, another young Gunner Carl Jenkinson has called for all the club's up-and-coming stars to seize their opportunity.

"There are a lot of young players in the squad, me included," he said. "But we are there for a reason - people believe in us - and all of us young ones have to step up to the mark and take responsibility, and that is what we will do.

"Our squad is stretched, that is quite obvious, but the people who have come in did well [against Liverpool] so I don't think there can be too many complaints.

"We are going to have ups and downs but that is part of football. We did well against Udinese and then things did not go our way with Liverpool. But we will bounce back.

"We have got a lot of quality and will come back from this, without a doubt."
