Arsenal are weighing up a move for Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol according to reports in the London Metro.

The 31-year-old stopper has fallen well down the pecking order at the Bernabeu, currently finding himself behind Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho and Rafael Varane in Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho's thinking.

With Gunners boss Arsene Wenger keen to add a central defender to his ranks at the Emirates Stadium before the close of the transfer window next week, reports emanating from Spain suggest Albiol could be available at a knockdown price.

After the sale of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, and Samir Nasri to Manchester City today, Arsenal fans will be hoping for some positive transfer news - and could be encouraged by the acquisition of the experienced Spanish international.

However, Wenger and Co. could face competition for Albiol's signature from the player's former club Valencia - who are armed with the £24million received for Juan Mata, and are prepared to offer up to £8million to bring him back to the Mestalla.

Arsenal were linked with Albiol in 2009 when switched his La Liga allegiances, and will be hoping not to miss out on the player again, as they look to push through a deal for the 6ft 3in stopper in the coming days.
