French teenager Darnel Situ is set to sign for Newcastle United after a successful trial period at the club.

The 19-year-old scored for the Toon on reserve team debut in a 5-0 victory over Gateshead Reserves, and is thought to have impressed Alan Pardew's staff during his time at St. James' Park.

Situ signed professionally for Lens back in 2009, but is yet to make a senior appearance for the side relegated from Ligue 1 last season.

The Daily Mail reports that Newcastle United 'are to sign' the highly-rated youngster, and are also closing in on PSV Eindhoven full back Eric Pieters.

Pieters is thought to be seen by Alan Pardew as the ideal replacement for Jose Enrique, as the Magpies look to replace the Spanish defender in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Agent Piet van der Pol confirmed: "I don't know the exact numbers of Newcastle United's offer, but I'm pretty sure that the transfer will go ahead."

Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, Brest's Nolan Roux and Guilleme Hoarau of PSG are also thought to be possible options for Newcastle as Pardew looks to shuffle the pack.
