Toon 'keeper plays key role in Dutchman addition

Should Newcastle complete the signing of Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven, then they could have Tim Krul to thank for convincing his compatriot that St James' Park is the place to be.

Holland international, Pieters, has been identified as an ideal replacement for Jose Enrique - who joined Liverpool earlier this month - although the two clubs are at somewhat of a deadlock over the valuation of the 23-year-old.

Pieters, though, is still optimistic a deal can be completed within the coming days, and he can become a Newcastle player before the transfer deadline.

"If a club from the Premier League says they want you, and that is the case, then you know the financial means they have," the left-back told Algemeen Dagblad.

"Whether I play for PSV at Excelsior on Sunday or am already at Newcastle I do not know."

Pieters also added that, while he does not know a great deal about Newcastle, he has been told plenty of positive things by Magpies shot-stopper Krul.

He added. "I have not seen much of Newcastle myself but my friend Tim Krul keeps me informed."
