Lyon defender Aly Cissokho reportedly retains hope of joining Newcastle before the transfer deadline, despite the north-east club closing in on Erik Pieters of PSV Eindhoven.
According to L'Equipe, the France international is 'very keen' on a move to St James' Park, and has informed his current employers of this ambition.
Newcastle are reported to have made an enquiry as the availability of Cissokho, 23, although they have since turned their attention to the more affordable Pieters.
Lyon would allegedly demand Newcastle pay around £10 million to sign Cissokho, while Pieters is available at closer to £7 million.
However, Newcastle have yet to reach an agreement with PSV for Pieters, although the Holland international is optimistic an agreement can be reached prior to the close of the transfer window.
Pieters, 23, has been identified by Newcastle as a capable replacement for Jose Enrique, who was sold to Liverpool earlier this month.
