Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler wants to bolster his attacking options, but concedes that the impending closure of the transfer window means he may have to resort to the loan market.
The Gills have been looking to add a striker to their ranks ever since Adam Birchall sustained a knee injury in pre-season.
Hessenthaler told the Kent Messenger: "It could be the case that we go and get a loan in and we go from there, that could suit us better at the moment. We will have a look and see what goes on this week."
He added: "You never know what could happen in the next couple of days.
"It is more likely it will happen afterwards though and it will be a loan."
One player the Gills have been linked with is Charlton's Paul Benson, but Hessenthaler moved to play down the rumours.
"He is a good player and he has done very well but we haven't spoken about him," he added.
