Former Manchester United trainee David Mellor has been handed his first professional contract for Oldham.

The 18-year-old was due to begin the third year of his scholarship but the Latics have offered him a two-year deal instead.

Mellor told the club's official website: "It was a surprise to be offered a professional contract as I had not been expecting it."

He added: "It is a great stepping stone and I am hoping this is just the start of a long career."

He featured in Oldham's pre-season fixtures and scored in the Latics' friendly win over Blackpool, and insists he will happily slot in anywhere.

He added: "I don't mind where I play as long as I am in the team."
