Steve Bruce is hoping to bring in a much-needed striker to the Sunderland squad with a bid of £14 million for Papiss Demba Cisse, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Senegalese is currently playing in the Bundesliga for SC Freiburg and has already scored 32 goals in just 51 games after joining in 2010.
Sunderland have scored just one goal this season when Sebastian Larsson volleyed on his debut against Liverpool and now Bruce is ready to break the club transfer record to bring in a proven goal scorer.
The 26-year-old is attracting a lot of interest from Barclays Premier League teams including Fulham, Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham, and Bruce will have his work cut out to convince Cisse to make the switch.
According to the tabloid newspaper, SC Freiburg are ready to cash in on the player after finishing ninth in the German league last year.
Sunderland, who also finished off mid-table last season, may have to wait even longer for their first win off the season as they welcome Chelsea to the Stadium of Light after the international break.
