Arsenal will reportedly attempt to sign Chris Samba before the transfer deadline, despite Per Mertesacker nearing a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Mertesacker has been allowed temporary leave from Germany's international training camp in order to undergo a medical in London prior to completing his switch from Werder Bremen.
But, according to The Telegraph, Arsenal will also renew their interest in £7 million Blackburn centre-back Samba as Arsene Wenger plans an overhaul of his defence.
Arsenal were walloped 8-2 by Manchester United on Sunday, which left Wenger with little doubt as to where the frailties in his current squad lie.
The Arsenal boss is known to be after an imposing central defender - or two - in order to provide a physical threat in both penalty areas, and Mertesacker and Samba would certainly fit the bill.
Arsenal have also been chasing Bolton's Gary Cahill, but reports on Tuesday claimed the Gunners had ended their interest in the England international.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have confirmed the capture of South Korea captain Park Chu-Young from Ligue 2 outfit Monaco.
