Villa chasing Irish starlet

Alex McLeish has confirmed he is hoping to tie up a deal for Shamrock Rovers youngster Enda Stevens, with only hours left in the transfer window.

Villa have undergone some big changes this summer, with a new manager alongside the club losing stars Stewart Downing and Ashley Young to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

The side have made some smart purchases during the summer though, garnering highly sought after midfielder Charles N’Zogbia from Wigan and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given for around £12 million combined.

And while the club have been relatively quiet today, McLeish has revealed that he is hoping to tie up a deal with Stevens before 11pm tonight.

"We've been watching Enda and have been very impressed with his exploits in the League of Ireland and in Europe," McLeish said.

"He's a young prospect, a boy with bags of potential and we're excited about doing a deal which benefits us and Shamrock."

Stevens has shone for both Shamrock and the Republic of Ireland Under 21 team, and the youngster also offers versatility, being able to play in both the left-back or centre-back positions.

According to Sky Sports, the deal involves Stevens still taking part in Shamrock's first Europa League campaign, before making the move to Aston Villa in January next year.
