Arsenal have confirmed that they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen to sign Germany international Per Mertesacker.

The defender has been strongly linked to the Gunners all summer, and Mertesacker completed a medical in London today and will make the move to Arsenal for a fee of around £8 million.

The deal is still subject to the completion of formal registration processes, but Arsenal believe that all will be tied up before the 11pm deadline.

The Gunners have been particularly busy over the last couple of days, with the club confirming agreements with Andre Santos and Park Chu-Young over the last 24 hours.

Mertesacker made 142 appearances for Werder Bremen, and the 26-year-old scored 12 goals in his time with the side. He has 75 caps for Germany and was a member of the 2010 World Cup squad that got through to the semi finals.

The centre-back will head straight back to the Germany squad tonight to prepare for their match up with Austria on Friday, before joining Arsenal to provide much needed support in the side’s back line when they take on Swansea on September 10th.
