Jamie Redknapp has insisted that Arsene Wenger should have signed Scott Parker, with the former Liverpool star arguing that the Gunners’ problem in the back four is still yet to be fixed.
“We were all looking at Arsenal to see what Arsene Wenger will do and in Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun he has got players that know the Premier League,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“It doesn't surprise me at all that he didn't buy English because he just doesn't fancy them or see any value in them and although he's signed a couple of young ones, it just isn't his thing, is it?
“I actually thought they were crying out for a bit of 'Britishness'. I really thought they needed someone like Scott Parker and in that respect I still don't think they have sorted out a problem that was crying out to be fixed: they still don't have someone to sit in front of that back four.
“Maybe Wenger thinks Alex Song and Abou Diaby can do the job and maybe he doesn't want to stifle the development of Emmanuel Frimpong, but Parker would've been perfect.”
Arsenal have had one of their busiest days on deadline day, making five signings in the last 24 hours. And while the Gunners have made Robin van Persie their skipper, Redknapp believes that Arsenal needed Parker to be a leader for the club as well as a good midfielder.
“Arteta and Benayoun are two good players, but I wouldn't call them leaders, someone for the young players to turn to when things have been going wrong,” Redknapp said of Arsenal's new signings.
“I equate football to life: when you're young you make mistakes and do things you that leave you asking 'why did I do that?', things you don't do when you're 28 or 29.
“What you need then is someone to put their arm around you, tell you not to worry and assure you you'll get it right next time.”
