Manchester City signing Owen Hargreaves is looking forward to taking on a new challenge this season, and contributing to one of the best up and coming sides in Europe.
Hargreaves was a shock deadline day signing for City, after the 30-year-old was released by Manchester United at the start of the summer.
And the midfielder, who will have to compete with some of the best players in the league for a place on the pitch, insists that tough challenges are nothing new to him.
“I like to measure myself with the best, I’ve always done that, and I’ve always taken on challenges regardless,” Hargreaves said.
“Being born in Germany as a kid and moving from a comfortable situation in Bayern Munich to Manchester United, I like new challenges and it’s a great challenge [at City], a fantastic group of players here, and I think I’ll be a good addition to these guys. I’m looking forward to helping out.”
Hargreaves has suffered years of injury setbacks with United, and made only four appearances over three seasons for the club. But the England international said he knows he’s back to his best now, and has learnt a lot from the experience.
“Looking from outside, you think something’s gone wrong, the guy’s made out of glass, but anyone who knows me knows how I play,” Hargreaves said.
“I take it very seriously and professionally, and I don’t think everybody had all the facts and a lot of things happened that basically I wish wouldn’t have.
“But it’s a huge learning curve for myself, and I would have never anticipated ending up in that position.
“I’m just happy that that chapter is behind me and I’m looking forward to getting back to playing football, and having fun having a good time joining in with the lads and competing again.”
Hargreaves won’t be rushed into the City squad next week, with the midfielder still trying to get match fit.
