Marseille midfielder Lucho Gonzalez has revealed that Arsenal were interested in his services this summer.

The veteran Argentine was heavily linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 side this summer, with Malaga and Roma also thought to be keen on the player.

However, the Gunners now appear to have been chasing the 30-year-old strongest in the summer window, although Arsene Wenger eventually took his search elsewhere.

The player himself admitted his excitement at the possibility of an Arsenal switch, but excepts that the possibility of a move to the Emirates is now likely to be gone because of his age.

"I did not want to go, but an opportunity to play for Arsenal appeared and that interest should make any player proud, especially when one is reaching his 30s," he told La Nacion.

"An agreement was not reached because they wanted a younger player whom they could later sell and they went after that kind of player."

On a busy deadline day for the club, Wenger secured the services of Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun in the Arsenal midfield before 11pm Wednesday.

The Frenchman also strengthened in defence, with Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos joining the ranks. Park Chu-Young also moved to Arsenal to bolster their attacking options.
