Manchester United will contest Chelsea for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric when the winter transfer window opens in January, it has been claimed.
According to the Evening Standard, the Barclays Premier League champions are keen to reignite their interest in Modric, while Chelsea will continue their pursuit of the 25-year-old in the new year.
The Blues had at least three offers for the Spurs playmaker rejected during the summer, with the last - a £40 million bid - dismissed a day before the transfer deadline.
United, meanwhile, had shown an interest in Modric as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to bring a successor to Paul Scholes to Old Trafford.
The United boss, however, instead focused his attention on signing Samir Nasri or Wesley Sneijder, but was unable to secure the signature of either player.
This will reportedly lead United back to Modric, with Ferguson still intent on bolstering his midfield ranks.
The emergence of Tom Cleverley has, so far, compensated for the loss of Scholes, but Ferguson wants another experienced performer in the middle of the park.
