Fiorentina are set to begin talks with Stevan Jovetic - a summer target for Liverpool - with the hope of the winger signing a new contract with the Serie A club.

The 21-year-old was also reportedly pursued by Chelsea during the transfer window, but Fiorentina managed to keep hold of their man, and will now attempt to tie him down on a long-term deal.

"The first contact between the two parties have been positive and there will be more negotiations over the next few months," said Viola sporting director Pantaleo Corvino.

"Stevan Jovetic is a very important player for Fiorentina and we want him to stay with us."

Liverpool, meanwhile, were keen to bring Jovetic to Anfield in early summer - something the Montenegrin's agent confirmed.

"I can confirm that Liverpool have been interested recently and are following him - but I have received no call from England," said Fali Ramadani.

Whether or not a formal offer was made by Liverpool remains to be seen, but the Reds eventually decided to switch their attention on Stewart Downing.
