Rooney at the double for England

Published Add your comment

Two-goal Wayne Rooney helped England take another step towards the Euro 2012 finals with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Bulgaria in Sofia.

The Manchester United striker had gone a year without an international, goal but made up for lost time after Gary Cahill had opened the scoring in his first competitive start for England.

After the hosts failed to clear an England corner, Gareth Barry chipped a cross towards the far post, and it was the Bolton Wanderers centre back who controlled with his chest and fired low through the keeper.

Another set-piece helped the Three Lions move two goals ahead, with Wayne Rooney beating skipper John Terry to the header at the far post.

England were cruising, and on the stroke of half-time a swift break saw Rooney seal the match for the visitors. United teammate Ashley Young found his colleague with a low-cross to the far post, and the striker tapped in unchallenged.

Rooney is now on 28 goals for his country and joint eighth in the all-time list as England maintained their 100% away record in the qualifiers.
