Manager Peter Reid vowed to turn around the fortunes of crisis-club Plymouth for the sake of their fans after a 2-1 loss at Burton.

Argyle were left rooted to the foot of League Two after goals from in-form strikers Justin Richards and Calvin Zola clinched victory for the Brewers - their first home triumph of the campaign.

But at the end of "a very tough week" in which Argyle narrowly averted a strike by senior players over unpaid wages, veteran boss Reid said: "I've got nothing but admiration for our supporters and we owe it to them to give them a team to be proud of."

He added: "I've played for big clubs and I've played in internationals, but you can't help having affection for fans who travelled in their hundreds and gave us fantastic backing here."

Reid admitted the events of the week had disrupted his preparations for the game but praised his players.

He said: "I've had players who spent time on the phone to their bank manager on Thursday and Friday so the preparation for the game wasn't the best. That does affect players, even if I say it shouldn't do. It's been tough but they still kept going and gave me everything."

Burton boss Paul Peschisolido was unhappy with the way his side allowed Plymouth to keep Albion fans on tenterhooks.

Peschisolido said: "We just fell asleep in the final minutes of the game which is something we've got to eradicate. I'm disappointed with our lacklustre reaction to situations that could have changed the game.

"But on the positive side, my two strikers have done the business again. If Justin's goal had been scored in the Premier League they'd be showing it time and again. It was a magnificent goal.

"Calvin was a nuisance and took his goal well and it's great to have our goalscorers in good form. It's three points and we'll take it, although we've still got things to work on. They (Plymouth) were galvanised by the fact they've been paid and I know their manager is fantastic at keeping morale together."
