United eyeing Toon defender

Carlisle boss Gregg Abbott wants to extend James Tavernier's loan deal from Newcastle United by a further month according to skysports.com.

The 19-year-old full-back has started five of the Cumbrians' six League One fixtures this season, as he continues to provide cover for the injured Frank Simek who is out until October.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew is a known admirer of Tavernier's talent, but was happy to send him away from St. James' Park on loan to gain some much needed first-team football.

The player is due to return to Newcastle on September 13, but Abbott told the Times & Star he has approached the Barclays Premier League club about the possibility of extending a deal.

"We want to keep James a bit longer and we hope to make progress on that with Newcastle this week."
